Chelsea, High Line and the Meatpacking District
Take a stroll on the High Line, NYC newest, coolest old thing – the world’s second elevated outdoor park built on top of an abandoned railroad trestle! Its a park, 30 feet above the ground! Its got gorgeous views of incredibly expensive apartments! Its got architecture and art and good looking people! It’s one of a kind, and the very specific Rails to Trails future for the formerly industrial and shipping neighborhoods of New York City. Get the concept of adaptive reuse of abandoned industrial infrastructure and the need for more parks, versus the hypergentrification of the Meatpacking District – a formerly working class neighborhood that was suddenly transformed into Hollywood’s version of NYC – a cool but somewhat artificial neighborhood of cobblestone streets, industrial chic boutiques and upscale restaurants and lounges with hardly a scrap of working class left. We will visit art galleries in Chelsea depending on time of day and day of week.
