Tour The Brooklyn Bridge, DUMBO & Fulton Ferry
In 1860, a bridge to span the East River would have to be twice as long as the previously longest bridge to not disrupt the country’s busiest waterway. But genius bridge engineer and inventor John Augustus Roebling would not be daunted and designed the Gothic suspension bridge in 1869, only to die due to a bizarre ferry accident before construction began.
It was John's son Washington Roebling and Washington's wife Emily who took over the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. With an army of immigrant workmen who endured working in the hellish caissons, this extraordinary team built the bridge we have today.
