Off-Broadway’s 20at20

Everyone wants to see a Broadway show when they visit New York, but real New Yorkers know that some of the best theatre can be seen “Off-Broadway.” From January –February 9, 2014, you can buy Off-Broadway tickets for just $20 with Off-Broadway’s 20at20 promotion. There are 20 shows participating in the 20 day long promotion including hits like “Avenue Q” and kid friendly shows such as “Angelina Ballerina.”  The one caveat to this deal is that the tickets are only available 20 minutes before curtain time.  People will start lining up hours before hand for the biggest hits so prepare to bundle up and play a lot of CandyCrush on your smartphone.

What is “Off-Broadway” you ask? Professional theatre shows are divided into categories by the Actors’ Equity Association. The two largest categories that exist in New York City or Broadway and Off-Broadway. To be a Broadway show, you don’t actually need to be on the street Broadway. Some theatres are actually several blocks removed from Broadway. To be a Broadway house, you must have a contract with the Actor’s Equity Association, be in New York City, and have a theatre that seats more than 500 audience members. Off-Broadway also have a contract with the Actors’ Equity Association, but the theatres are slightly smaller ranging from 100-499 seats. The performers, directors, composers, designers, are the same quality as Broadway shows. Sometimes, they are even better. Several Off-Broadway shows have been so successful that they moved to larger Broadway houses. Such musicals include “A Chorus Line,” “Rock of Ages,” and “25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee. Do yourself a favor and see an Off-Broadway show!
