No Pants Subway Ride
Every New Yorker remembers their first experience with Improv Everywhere. What is Improv Everywhere you ask? It is a New York based comedic performance group that specializes in carrying out large scale pranks such a giant dancing light shows in Grant Central Terminal or creating giant 100 car alarm symphonies in Staten Island. The prank, or mission as they prefer to call it, that they are the most famous is the annual “No Pants Subway Ride.”
This year the thirteenth annual “No Pants Subway Ride” will take place on January 12th at 3p.m. It is a celebration of silliness where those participating ride the subway dressed in full winter gear, but with no pants. Yes, winter coats, scarves, hats, gloves, boots, but just their skivvies warming their bums. These pantless crusaders ride the MTA subway trains in groups for safety, but don’t interact with each other and keep a straight face. If someone asks them what is going on, they just say something along the lines of “I forgot my pants.” It’s brilliant to watch the reactions unsuspecting New Yorkers and tourists alike as the “No Pants” participants board the train. People’s bravery with their underwear does vary from oversized boxers to rather scandalous panties. It’s all in good fun and everyone has a fabulous time and returns home with a story to tell.
While the “No Pants Subway Ride” did begin in New York and is very much a New York institution, there are now more than 60 cities all over the world participating. (New York tends to be the trendsetter for such awesomeness.) You too can join the “No Pants Subway Ride” and be a part of this Improv Everywhere mission. You can find details about how to participate on the Improve Everywhere website!
See you there!
