New York Guitar Festival

January is cold, but it is also a month filled with guitar music in NYC so get out there and celebrate with the bi-annual guitar festival!

Guitar is one of the world’s most versatile instruments associated with sounds ranging from heavy metal, to folk ballads, and even to classical music. From January 10-30th, the New York Guitar Festival will explore virtually every aspect of the guitar’s musical personality. Leading guitarist in a multitude of genres will perform at venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to Joe’s Pub, to Brookfield Place at the World Financial Center.

Pepe Romero, hailed by many as the second greatest classical guitarist who ever lived, will be performing an “All Bach” concert on his guitar, the Alt Guitar Summit will feature the Jazz/Funk Electronica music of Joel Harrison, Will Bernard, and Pleasure Drones, there will be a six hour guitar marathon titled “Guitar Marathon: Las Americas” featuring classical guitar of North and South America, and several artists such as Luther Dickinson, Badi Assad, and Marc Ribot will premier guitar scores to silent films in an event called “Silent Films/Live Guitars.” Many of these events, including the six hour guitar marathon, will be free!

The New York Guitar Festival was founded in 1999 by radio host and author John Schaefer and musician, producer, and curator David Spelman who still serves as the festival’s artist director.
