NYC Artists Tour: From Graffiti to Galleries
Whether you call it "neighborhood blight" or "high art," graffiti has had an inarguable impact on NYC neighborhood transformations. Learn about the ever-changing development of neighborhoods and the difference between tags, throw-ups, vandalism, street art, graffiti, murals and wheatpastes on this killer walking tour where street art intersects with condos & industry.
During this Manhattan art tour, we'll travel from the classy galleries of Chelsea over the incredibly re-imagined High Line park, built from an abandoned industrial rail line. From the High Line its down into industrial-chic Meatpacking District with boutiques and luxury restaurants replacing the butchers as recently as 5 years ago. Still, MePa has excellent street art. Then its off to gander at the boutiques and condos of gentrified SoHo and the tenements and graffiti of the Lower East Side. These were working class, ethnic neighborhoods where in many cases, the run-down industrial zones attracted young hip artists who took advantage of cheap rent and started to create art which soon became prized by collectors. Understand the difference between working-artist areas and neighborhoods where the veneer of art is only a pretext to sell real estate.
If thats not enough, we can schedule some visits to some of New York's exclusive art schools, including Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute and the School of Visual Arts.
Tour length is dependent upon number of neighborhoods & galleries we visit.
