Brooklyn Beats & Eats – A Food, History & Culture Tour

On this 4-hour tasting tour of New York’s BEST borough, we travel the world but stay in Brooklyn!
We’ll taste our way through a series of neighborhoods in order to experience the diverse, exciting ethnic communities that make Brooklyn the place to be in the 21st Century. From old-school Syrian markets offering meze platters stacked with stuffed grape leaves, hummus & baba ganoush to new-school, old style Jewish appetizing shops with the most mind-blowing smoked salmon sandwiches you’ve ever had. There’s awesome pizza from a sixty-year-old slice shop, there’s artisanal ice cream at a factory parked on top of an industrial canal and there’s layered and luscious Mexcian tortas inside a hidden deli.

Our first stop is Atlantic Avenue’s Middle Eastern market Sahadi’s, for our Lebanese specialties. This is right across from the most beautiful Trader Joe’s you’ve ever seen – built inside the shell of the former Brooklyn Saving’s Bank. This is also where we’ll learn about George Washington’s Battle of Brooklyn. Then we’ll hop inside Shelsky’s Appetizing Shop. This new-style, old-world Jewish Appetizing shop is a fine purveyor of smoked fishes, spreads, bagels, bialys and noshing. We’ll get a bite of their famous Brooklyn Transplant sandwich – hot smoked salmon, apple horseradish, pickled herring salad and cream cheese on pumpernickel. Trust us. Your tongue won’t believe it’s eyes.
After Shelsky’s, we’ll ride along Court street through Cobble Hill & Carroll Gardens to Esposito’s Salumeria – a 40-year-old butcher where we’ll nibble on spicy pork soppressata (dry-cured sausage) & mini-mozz balls.

Then we continue to Sunset Park, Brooklyn’s one-half Mexican, one-half Chinese neighborhood. At Don Pepe’s Torteria, we get the delicacy unknown in most parts of America – the Mexican chicken sandwich. Built on freshly baked bread, layered with avocado, refried beans, lettuce, tomato and jalapeno, ir’ll change the way you think about tacos.
Food costs are $45 per person. Talk to Mark when booking your tour.
